Nearly impossible, but…

One way that helps a lot is to use a spinning sander. Could be a small ‘bit’ with a padded surface for sticky sandpaper, or a dedicated tool that is a handle with that pad end that turns easily, and is ‘powered’ by the spinning of the spindle itself. I use one of these with great success. Both of these can be hook and loop connection between the pad and the sandpaper, which works MUCH better for switching grades of sandpaper. I’m not near my shop now to give you a maker name, but mines a standard tool maker for wood turning. Any decent sized purveyor of woodworking tools will have these available.
