In the above video I share my recent visit to the Woodworking workshop at the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. This is where they build reproduction furniture and give visitors an idea of what daily life was like in this Shaker village.
If you missed the previous parts, watch them here to learn more about this incredible Shaker village and about the furniture making DVDs that Will Myers and I filmed footage for there.
The greatest part of any of my workshop visits is getting to make friends with the people who make these places special. Thanks Hancock folks!
Here are some links to a couple of my favorite books on building Shaker furniture (warning: gorgeous furniture photos):
- “How To Build Shaker Furniture” by Tom Moser
- “Pleasant Hill Shaker Furniture” by Kerry Pierce
- “Shop Drawings of Shaker Furniture & Woodenware” (Vols, 1, 2 & 3) by Ejner Handberg
- “The Shakers: From Mount Lebanon to the World” (This place is 4 miles from Hancock)
Here’s a few other photographs of this beautiful Hancock Shaker Village:
Check out Hancock’s website here, and visit their free furniture database here to get ideas for shaker furniture projects.
And again, here are some of the furniture pieces that I will be releasing tutorial DVDs for, featuring Will Myers:
Please would you reveal the name and artist of the peice at the end of ths video?
Cheers
Most of the music is by my friends Jonathan & Peter Lubeck…brothers who live in Roanoke, VA.
I really need to check this place out. I live close enough.
Either video. Navy “got hand Plane?” I am from New Hampshire.
What superb design the shakers mastered, so easy on the eye! I’m in the process of trying to create a candle stand but doubt it’ll look as good as the original, so your video of the candle stand would be a great help!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
