I’m excited to share a quick video tutorial about how to cut a rabbet joint by hand, with a few simple hand tools. This method focuses on cutting a rabbet joint along the grain, which is especially useful for cutting moldings (first step in using hollows & rounds molding planes), picture frames, etc.
Here are some links to the tools that I used to make this rabbet joint:
- Marking gauge (I like the wheel type)
- Medium or large shoulder plane
- Rabbet Plane (you can use metal or wooden; new or old)
Pretty neat trick tilting the plane like that to get started. The woodworker in the sash window video (http://5d9.c5f.myftpupload.com/the-house-jointer-make-sash-windows/) uses his chisel to create a similar groove to place his saw in at 3:37. I thought that was kind of clever as well. Great blog you have here :)
Arjen, yea, a lot of joiners will score a knife line to start their saw cut. Thanks for enjoying my blog! How did you find me?
found you through pinterest, looking for pretty pictures of woodwork and hand tools I guess.
